He was in the 30th entry of RAF Apprentices at RAF Halton He was on Stirling N6001 (c/s MG-?) which took off from RAF Oakington, Cambs on at 22:57 on 29th June 1941 to bomb Hamburg. It crashed a Wesermunde- Brenerhaven. All on board were killed and are buried at Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany. from http://sas.raf38group.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1060&p=9998&hilit=n6001#p9998 The crew of Stirling N6001 took off at 2257 hours on the evening of Sunday 29th June 1941 on an operation to bomb a target at the German City of Hamburg Germany. At approximately 0210 hours a farmer at the village of Stemmuhlen bei Beverstedt observed the Stirling flying very low and appeared to be hedge hopping trying to avoid anti aircraft fire.All the engines were observed be running perfectly. Herr Heinrich Rosebrock then saw the aircraft dip and it crashed into one of his fields and on impact there was a violent explosion which killed all the crew instantaneously.The crew were recovered from the crash site and were buried at Geestermunde Cemetery,Wesermunde. In 1946 the crew were re-interred in Becklingen Military Cemetery Soltau. The Crew: Pilot- Sqdn/Ldr Seale, W T C, [RAF] - 2nd pilot-Sgt Barrett R.L. [RAAF]. Flight Engineer- F/Sgt Brown, M G, [RAF] - Observe- F/Sgt Grocock, B W, [RAF] - Wireless Operator/Air Gunner- F/Sgt Walls, R E, [RAF] - Wirelsss Operator/Air Gunner- F/Sgt Whittle, L, [RAF] - Rear Gunner- F/Sgt Archer, H T, [RAF] Only the bodies of Sqn/Ldr Seale and F.Sgt Archer were identified RAF Bomber Command Losses, Volume 2: 1941: W R Chorley; Midland Publishing, 2006. however has : "Shot down by a German night-fighter flown by Oblt Helmut Lent of 6/NJG1." Oblt Lent also shot down Stirling N3664 (MG-Z) the same night.
